Sancaklar Mosque Wins Faith&Form Award
Faith & Form Magazine, alongside Interfaith Design, announced Sancaklar Mosque by EAA – Emre Arolat Architecture has received Honor Award in Sacred Landscape Category.
The Annual Religious Art and Architecture Design Awards program is co-sponsored by Faith & Form Magazine and Interfaith Design (ID), a Knowledge Community of the American Institute of Architects. The Awards program was founded in 1978 with the goal of honoring the best in architecture, liturgical design, and art for religious spaces. The 2019 Design Awards Jury was chaired by Kathleen Lane, Associate AIA.
Arolat explained his design by saying, “I wanted to go back to essence of the ritual of worship in Islam by designing a space that is freed from the cultural burdens that have ruled the mosque design for centuries. Design of Sancaklar Mosque can be defined through humbleness; this is a mosque that blends in the place and does not show any particular building form or shape for the eye of the approaching visitor —one descends through steps merged into the topography and then reaches to the entrance. This approach is carried on in the interiors with the honesty of materials —the only decoration is the light that washes the exposed concrete walls.”
