On 7th January 2025, a series of devastating wildfires broke out in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles, burning approximately 11.5 square kilometers and being recorded in history as one of the largest fires to ever devastate the region. In the aftermath, a Los Angeles-based real estate investment firm, Crest Real Estate, drew inspiration from the iconic “Case Study Houses” project published by Arts & Architecture Magazine in 1945 following World War II.
Seeking to design a healthy and creative housing solution to address the issue, the firm launched a series of design studies tailored to the Palisades, Los Angeles region with an emphasis on sustainable, resilient architecture – titled “Case Study 2.0 Rebuilding Los Angeles”. The goal is to develop a catalogue of modular, scalable homes – adaptable to various plot sizes and user needs – and to construct homes in line with the preference of property owners.

In this context, EAA proposed “A House with Three Courtyards” – a design that offers a genuine Mediterranean lifestyle within the privatized quarters of suburban Palisades neighborhood – reminiscent of the Aegean and Mediterranean towns. Each courtyard is a paced moment to enter, gather and live well. With roots tracing to true lived Mediterranean towns, the courtyard becomes the heart of the home – catering a place for both intimacy, moments of inwardly collection and generous communal gathering. Mediterranean architecture exists in a space between myth and reality, its presence is an experience of fragmentary moments.
The project will be presented at the launch event to be held in Eco Outdoor, Los Angeles on 26th of June, 2025 with Zeynep Arolat attending on behalf of EAA.
